Emma Bertrand Smith was born in 1890 in Iowa. Her father's family were recent immigrants from Belgium. Her mother's family can be traced back to before the American Revolution in the United States.
Her grandparents, Catherine and Francois Bertrand, immigrated from Belgium in 1870. They lived briefly in Illinois where they died. Their three sons moved to Iowa. Emma's father, Joseph Bertrand, was a plumber.
Emma's mother's grandfather, Thomas Long, was a Union soldier in the Civil War. Thomas was born in Ohio, moved to Illinois where he married and then moved his family to Iowa. They finally homesteaded in North Dakota. Thomas Long married Louisa Taylor who descended from a long line of German Lutherans.
