Cross Family

  Also spelled: Crosse  
  William Crosse was born at St. Clement Danes, London, England on April 24, 1616. He was the son of William Crosse (1579-1679) and Alice Simpson Cross (1582-1680).

William married Hester Gassaway in 1667. Hester was born about 1619 and was the daughter of Thomas Gassaway (1600-1658) and Joanna Wood (1600-1628).

William and Hester's children included:
John Crosse (1668) and
Thomas Crosse 
Elizabeth Cross
 
 
 
Maryland was established with religious freedom for Catholics. The colonial economy was based on tobacco cultivated by Africans who had been enslaved.

John Crosse was born about 1668 in Talbot County, Maryland. His parents were William Crosse and Hester Gassaway

He married Rachel Proctor.

Joseph Cross (1687, married Elizabeth Merryman),
William Cross (1688, married Ann ),

Henry Cross (married Mary Barrett)

His wecond wife was Elinor Selby

Richard Cross (1710, married Hannah),
Thomas Cross (1711, married Sarah Matthews),
Joshua Cross (married)

He died in 1719 in Baltimore County, Maryland.

American colonists continued to use British monetary units, namely the pound, shilling and pence for which £1 (or li) equalled 20s and 1s equalled 12d. In 1792 the dollar was established as the basic unit of currency. Encyclopedia of British and Early American Coins
