Berkeley County, Virginia was created from the northern third of Frederick County, Virginia in 1772. Jefferson County was formed from the county's eastern section. In 1863 Berkeley County became part of the new state of West Virginia.

The Society of Friends (Quakers)began in England in the 1650s, when they broke away from the Puritans. Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn, as a safe place for Friends to live and practice their faith.

Elizabeth Coulston Ellis was born in Hanover Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania near Sanatoga which was once called Crooked Hill, in what is now Lower Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

She was raised by Henry Coulston and Rebecca Braun. Some researchers believe her parents were William Coulston, Jr. and Ann Rhoads.

She married Enos Ellis was born about 1730. He was the son of Thomas Ellis and Jane Hughes.

Elizabeth and Enos' children probably included:

Thomas Ellis (1749, married Margaret Reece/Rees, daughter of Morris Reece/Rees, Jr.),
Hannah Ellis (1750, married Jacob Pickering son of Samuel Pickering),
Rebecca (Rebekah) Ellis (1753, married Benjamin Pickering son of Samuel Pickering),
Jane Ellis (1755, married John Pickering son of William Pickering),
Dinah Ellis (1758),
Ellis Ellis (1760, married Mary Pickering daughterof William Pickering),
William Ellis (1762),
Enos Ellis (1764, married 1793 Mary Pearce), and
Jonathan Ellis (1766, married Lydia Woodrow).

Enos took his family to, what is now, West Virginia in 1763. They probably traveled along the Great Wagon Road. They were among the early settlers.

In Virginia they worshiped at the Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Frederick County, Virginia.

In 1771, the meeting appointed Enos Ellis to meet the committee from the quarterly meeting.

It 1778 they pledged 15£ for

...the Benefit of the Indians, who were formerly the Native Owners of the Lands, on which we now live, or thire descendents if to be found, and if not for the service, & benefit of Other Indians....

Enos Ellis had 308 acres according to the Berkeley County tax list.

Some of their children moved to Greene County, Tennessee. The 1809 tax list in
Greene County, Tennessee in Captain John Stanfield's District has:

The Great Wagon Road was the most important Colonial American route for settlers of the mountainous backcountry. It went from Philadelphia to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. One fork went to the Tennessee Valley and Knoxville and the other to the Piedmont Region of North Carolina.

In 1607 the London Company established Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony.
